Sancho Panza & Sabanero

Sancho Panza is such a cheerful soul, and he's working hard to leave his past mistreatment behind him. It's a sad fact that donkeys often don't have much commercial value, so they're sometimes used for things like guarding against predators like coyotes and dogs. And when their owners can no longer care for them, they're often left to fend for themselves—or even worse, taken to slaughterhouses. Thankfully, Sancho Panza was rescued before that could happen to him.

It’s so heartbreaking because donkeys, sadly, are often overlooked. Because people don’t always see their value, they end up abandoned or even sent to slaughter. It’s just not right.

Sabanero, this sweet little miniature donkey, came to us with a really sad story. He'd been rescued from this horribly overcrowded place – imagine, over fifteen animals crammed onto just one acre! They barely had room to move, let alone roam and explore like they were meant to. It was just awful. His previous owner was struggling too and just couldn't give him the care or food he needed. It's so heartbreaking because donkeys, sadly, are often overlooked. Because people don't always see their value, they end up abandoned or even sent to slaughter. It's just not right.

When Sabanero came to us, you could see the marks of his past. He had this old leg injury, a constant reminder of the neglect he'd been through. But even with that, he was such a gentle soul. He quickly became part of the family. He was actually one of the first animals we ever rescued, which made him even more special. He was a real pioneer for us, you know?

Then, in the summer of 2024, we lost him. It was absolutely devastating. We miss him so much. Honestly, not a day goes by that we don't think about him, about his amazing personality, how strong he was, and all the joy he brought into our lives. He really left a mark on us, one that will never go away.
